Jai Matha Church, Satelli-Bhedshi, Via Dodamarg,
Sindhudurg Dt. 416 530

The origin of the pastoral and spiritual ministry in Bhedshi is intimately connected with the temporary and seasonal migrations of Syro-Malabar Catholic agriculturist from Kerala. MST priests, Fr Joseph kalarickal and Fr Jose Cheriampanatt, came in contact with these seasonal agriculturists and eventually stared staying in a rented house owned by Mr. Anand Rai Bhenge on August 01, 1991. Fr George Kuppayil also served the community for a short while. Since the Latin church was not made available, Syro-Malabar Qurbana for the people was celebrated in a rented hall near the residence of the Priests. In the meantime, the MST purchased 100 acres in 1993 and later 200 acres at Mulas from where the parish was looked after by Fr Joseph Kalarickal. Fr Augustine Thonikuzhy purchased the land and Fr Jose Thannipara constructed the church.

When the term of Fr Peter Kavumpuram as Regional Director was over in June 1998, he moved to Malkapur where the people wanted a mission school. But due to strong opposition from certain quarters the people who were in the forefront withdrew from the scene. Therefore the plan was dropped for the time being. Later Fr. Tom Mangalathil, the priest in-charge of Khutalwadi with the help of Fr. Paul Poovathinkal (Asst) and Sisters stared a nursery school in Malkapur which was later shifted to Karanjoshi, Shahuwadi in 2005.

10.1.       Parish and Mission

The beginning of Anugraha,Khed may be traced to the presence of a handful of Syro-Malabar faithful. Fr. Paul Theruvanmoola started staying in a rented flat at Khed in December 1994. Gradually he started Anugraha: AIDS awareness and information centre, and it conducted several awareness sessions and seminars across the mission, especially in the Tehsils of Khed and Chiplun. In 1997, he bought 3 acres of land about four Kms away from the Khed town, but close to the railway station. The first construction there was of a farmhouse.  The newly built temporary residence of the priest was blessed by Mar Thomas Elavanal on 1998 8th February. In June 1998, when Fr. Theruvanmoola was elected as one of the General Councillors of the MST he went to MST Generalate. Fr. Paul died in a bike accident at Bharanganam on 12th December 2000.
The construction of the special school was initiated and completed by Fr Peter Kavumpuram and it was blessed by Mar Thomas Elavanal on 2001 12th December. The work of the presbytery with the chapel was started by Fr Mathew Mulangothra and it was completed by Fr Chandy Kalathoor and it was blessed on 2010 16thMarch by Mar Thomas Elevanal.

11.1.       Mission Centre

The initial contact of Fr. Thomas Karamel with the village Bhadale, was continued by Fr. Antony Pedickattukunnel, the then Regional Treasurer of the mission.  The mission was started in September 1994 by Frs Pedickattukunnel and Antony Kaithottumkal. Fr. Kaithottumkal (and occasionally Fr. Pedickattukunnel) lived in a building shared by a villager in Bambawade. Later they moved to a cattle shed, and then to a Samaj Mandir of the village and again to a rented room in Bambawade and finally to the plot purchased at Khutalwadi. The Sarpanch of Khutalwadi was not co-operative in the beginning, but gradually the missionaries were able to win them over. The activities of this mission initially were: a dispensary run by the sisters, balawadis, tuition classes for the school-going childen, adult education programme, Mahila mandals, SHGs and other community development programmes. Sisters visited the villages to monitor the SHGs and other developmental activities.

St. Joseph’s Church, Kodoli P.O. 416 114, Kolhapur Dt. MH.,  ‘ 02328-223034

12.1.       Parish & Mission

The Mission at Kodoli, in the Panhala Taluka of Kolhpaur district, was started by Fr. Benny Arthanakunnel who arrived there in 1997 after a short-term appointment as assistant at Ratnagiri mission. When Fr. Arthanakunnel expressed his desire to work among the Christian communities, he was directed to a place called Kurlap which Fr. Anotny Kaithottumkal used to frequent from Khutalwadi station. Fr. Arthanakunnel stayed at Kurlap in a rented house and conducted house visits and prayer meetings and contacted several nearby villages one of which was Kodoli. Kodoli is big village with large number of Christians mostly belonging to Presbyterian and CNI churches.
Fr. Arthanakunnel shifted his residence from Kurlap to Kodoli village in July 1997 and it was used as a prayer centre. People came to this house for prayer and counselling. Finding alcoholism a big problem affecting the people, he got himself trained in de-addiction treatment at NIMHANS Bangalore. Thus he could help the people of his mission centre. He made use of every opportunity to preach about Jesus Christ directly to the non-Christian villagers. Gradually a very active prayer group was formed which developed later into daily Mass Centre and St. Joseph’s Church. Fr. Benny was on the look out for purchasing a plot of land. But it was not materialised as expected due to financial constraints and/or technical issues related to the proposed land. Staying at Kodoli Fr. Arthanakunnel started the pioneering work for Amalashram Retreat Centre at Talsande.  In 2003, he managed to buy a piece of land (one acre) at Talsande which is 5 Kms away from Kodoli. Fr Arthanakunnel eventually moved to Talsande. Fr Paul Painadath who succeeded Fr Benny, after long search, waiting and efforts was able to buy a small plot of land (18 cents) in the village Kodoli in 2011. Fr. Lijesh Panackavayalil is the priest-in-charge of St. Joseph’s station at Kodoli.

13.2.       Regional House
Kolhapur being a central place easily accessible to the missionaries, the Central Council of MST asked the Regional Director Fr Peter Kavumpuram to find a suitable place for the regional administration in Kolhapur. Fr. Karamel who was relieved from his temporary post as Regional treasurer in February 1994 was asked to look for a suitable place for the purpose. He first stayed with Jesuit fathers at St. Xavier’s and later moved to a rented house at Dattaji Park, 5thlane Rajarampuri. When a convenient house was found in the 14thlane Rajarampuri at 17 Sanmitra Housing Society, Kolhapur 416008, Frs. Peter Kavumpuram (Regional Director) and Antony Pedickattukunnel (Regional Treasurer) moved from Alphonsa Miraj to this rented house in the first week of September 1994. It functioned as the Regional house and office of the Sangli Mission Society till the building at Raman Mala was purchased. A plot of ½ acre of land was purchased at Halondi on Sangli road about 9 Kms from Kolhapur town and about 2 Kms from the Bangalore-Mumbai high way.
Since the plot was considered by many missionaries as not the ideal place for the Regional house, the Central Council permitted Fr Peter Kavumpuram to buy an old but strong and modest building at New Palace, Raman Mala in 1998.  The new regional house Sant Thoma Bhavan.was blessed by Mar Thomas Elavanal (Bishop of Kalyan) on 12th February 1998.
As the mission grew Sant Thoma Bhavan with additional six rooms constructed by the Society became insufficient, two flats in the building opposite to Sant Thoma Bhavan were booked and they were purchased in 2008 for office purposes. The new office flat was blessed by Bishop Paul Chittilappilly (former Bishop of Kalyan) on 4th December 2008 when he visited Sangli Mission. (Details of early history see Miraj Alphonsa)

Kripa Sadan and Alphonsa School, Kolhapur are situated at Padalikhurd, 12 Kms away from the Regional House: Sant Thoma Bhavan.  Ever since the land was purchased at Padalikhurd in May 2003, there was a proposal to open a school there. Fr. John Madukoly who was the regional procurator from 1998 to August 2008, was in charge of the centre and the first Manager of the school. He looked into the 1st phase of the construction staying at regional house.

15.2.       Alphonsa School

Alphonsa school with 12 kindergarten children was inaugurated by the Regional Director, Fr Thomas Chirackal on 15 June, 2004 in the rented house where the sisters resided. When a couple of rooms were ready by June 2005 in a temporary building (present residence of the manager) the school was shifted from the convent to Padali Khurd. In 2008 when Fr. Madukoly’ term as the Regional Treasurer got over, he shifted his residence to a rented house (Flat No. A- 8, Dyna Castle) on Phulewadi Ring  Road.  It was the residence of the manager till it was shifted to school premises at Padali Khurd in 2009.
Gradually, construction of the permanent school building progressed.  Standards I and II were shifted to the permanent school building in June 2007. The new school building was blessed in March 2008 by Very Rev. Fr. Kurain Ammanathukunnel (Director General MST). The school got approval for Std I in June 2009, and approval upto VII in 2012.

20.           Miraj: Dilasa [Tasgaon Phatta] (1998)

Dilasa Bhavan at Mirajisa Rehab Centre owned by the Missionary Society of St. Thomas the Apostle (MST). Dilasais the name given to the various interventions carried out for the care and support of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAS), awareness, prevention and control of AIDS, and stigma eradication by Sangli Mission Society. HIV/AIDS programs were initiated in the mission by Fr Thomas Karamel, Fr George Muttathupadam and late Fr Paul Theruvanmoola. Sangli Mission Society has initiated several activities for the People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) under the umbrella of DILASA. It has expanded its mission among the PHLAs in four districts of Maharashtra, namely, Sangli (Dilasa Bhavan, Miraj), Kolhapur (Dilasa, Kolhapur), Ratnagiri (Navjeevan Arogya Kendra) and Sindhudurg. Presently Sangli Mission has one hospice (Dilasa Bhavan) in Miraj, two community care centers (CCC) and four coordination centers in each district for the care and support of PLHAS.
Dilasa project was begun by Fr. Joy Kunnel (Director of Social Action, Sangli Mission) in March 2005 in a rented house near Miraj Railway Station. This centre, headed by Fr. Kunnel, conducted various kinds of awareness and intervention programme for the HIV/AIDS affected in Sangli District, especially Miraj. Later Fr. Sabu Maprakavil joined the project in June 2006. He was given the charge of Dilasa Project and Fr. Kunnel continued as the Director of Social Action of Sangli Mission. It was Fr. Sabu Maprakavil who envisioned the opening of a hospice place for the HIV/AIDS infected, especially children.
Accordingly, he began a rehab centre ‘Dilasa Bhavan’ in a rented house at Subhash Nagar, Miraj for the HIV-infected children. The centre provides care for the children of the affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. Fr. Maprakavil continued also with the Dilasa project office near the Railway Station. This office was later shifted as the owner of the house wanted to renovate the building. During this time, another house (in the same street) was taken on rent for continuing with the Dilasa project office. However, this office was too eventually closed and Fr. Maprakavil continued with Dilasa Bhavan.
On 11, June 2007 Fr. Roshan Kuzhuppallil joined Dilasa project as assistant. He stayed with Fr. Sabu in Kupwad house near Alphonsa School, Miraj. Eventually Fr. Roshan was transferred to Kolhapur with independent charge of the Dilasa project activities in Kolhapur area (Jan 2009) for he was handling the project in Kolhapur and within this time project got a good support from the people of Kolhapur and a working office was established in Laxmipuri. During this period, Fr. Roshan had his stay at Sant Thoma Bhavan (Regional House), and he was appointed also as the Parish Priest of Alphonsa Church, Kolhapur.
It was during the period of Dilasa project that 2005 Maharashtra Floods took place from 29th August. The MST fathers who helped the relief work (Frs. Pullappally and Akkattukudilil) and flood relief project (Frs. Sasseril and Chettiakunnel) also had their stay in Kupwad house with Fr. Maprakavil. Snehagiri sisters too helped Dilasa Project for some time

In the initial phase of Dilasa Bhavan (i.e., when it was functioning in the rented house in Subhash Nagar, Miraj), two Holy Spirit nuns from Pune assisted in the day-today running of the rehab centre.  But they didn’t continue long because of shortage of personnel in their congregation. However, we were fortunate to get help from the DSS sisters whose convent was started at Ashadeep Sangli. From 2009 on, the DSS sisters assist in the management of Dilasa Bhavan. 26.           Talsande: Amalashram, Kolhapur

The history of Amalashram, Talsande is closely linked to Kodoli mission station. It was started and established by Fr. Benny Arthanakunnel who arrived in the mission in 1997. Amalashram at Talsande is an important milestone and achievement in Fr. Benny’s relentless pursuit for purchasing a piece land to setup a permanent place in Kodoli. In 2003, he succeeded in purchasing one acre of land but 5 kms away from Kodoli village. The people of Kodoli agreed to come there for prayers. So a house and a prayer hall were planned. Fr Cyriac Chandrankunnel MST promised financial support for the construction of a retreat centre at the newly purchased land.
As soon as the construction of a house (residence) was over, Fr. Arthanakunnel shifted his stay from Kodoli to Talsande. Bishop Mar Sebastian Vadakel blessed the house February 2007. Later Fr Arthanakunnel himself could harness additional funds and resources from his friends and well-wishers in Pune and Mumbai, etc. It was thus that the present ‘Amalashram’ retreat centre was constructed.
Very Rev Fr James Athikalam, Director General of MST, blessed the foundation stone for the retreat centre in November, 2009, and the stone was laid by Rev Fr Thomas Karamel (Regional Director) on the feast of Immaculate Conception, December 8th 2009. Inauguration and the blessing of the completed building of Amalashram was by Bishop Mar Thomas Elavanal on 23rd March 2012, in the esteemed presence of Rev. Fr Paul Mudathottiyil (Asst. Director General MST), Rev. Fr Thomas Chirackal (General Councilor MST), Thomas Karamel (Regional Director) and a large gathering of friends, well-wishers and invited guests from different parts of Maharashtra and the mission.
